This page explains what information silasbellhaven.com/blog collects, how it’s used, and what choices you have. It’s written to be genuinely readable rather than boilerplate — if anything here is unclear, email silasbellhaven@silasbellhaven.com and we’ll get back to you.

The short version

We don’t sell your information. We don’t require an account to read anything on this site. The only data we collect is what’s necessary to run comments, keep the site secure, and understand basic traffic patterns. If that’s all you needed to know, you can stop here.

What we collect

If you leave a comment, we collect what you type into the comment form, along with your IP address and browser information. This is standard practice used to catch spam before it’s ever visible to other readers — not to build a profile of who you are.

If you enter an email address when commenting, an anonymized version of it (a “hash”) may be checked against Gravatar, the service that provides profile pictures next to comments across the web. If you already use Gravatar, your picture may appear; if you don’t, nothing changes. Gravatar’s own privacy policy is available at automattic.com/privacy.

If you request a password reset (relevant only to site administrators, not general readers), your IP address is included in the reset email as a security measure.

We do not currently collect email addresses for a newsletter or mailing list. If that changes in the future, this page will be updated to reflect it, and you’ll always be told clearly what you’re signing up for at the point of signing up.

Cookies

If you leave a comment, you may be offered the option to save your name, email, and website in a cookie so you don’t have to re-enter them next time. These last one year and are entirely for your convenience — declining them doesn’t prevent you from commenting.

If you visit the site’s login page (used only by site administrators), a temporary cookie checks whether your browser accepts cookies. It contains no personal data and disappears when you close your browser.

Links to other websites, including Amazon

Some pages and articles on this site link out to Amazon and other retailers to help you find the books discussed here. When you click those links, you leave this site and are subject to that destination’s own privacy policy — we have no visibility into or control over what happens on Amazon’s side. Some of these links may be affiliate links, meaning we may earn a small commission on qualifying purchases at no additional cost to you. This has no effect on which books are discussed or how they’re described.

Embedded content

If any article includes embedded content from another site — a video, an image, a social post — that content behaves exactly as if you’d visited the original site directly. The embedding site may collect data, set its own cookies, and track your interaction with that specific piece of content, independent of anything on this page.

How long we keep data

Comments and their associated data are kept indefinitely, so that returning commenters don’t get held in a moderation queue unnecessarily. If you’d like a comment removed, email silasbellhaven@silasbellhaven.com and we’re glad to take care of it.

Your rights over your data

If you’ve left a comment on this site, you can request a copy of the personal data we hold about you, or request that it be deleted. The only exception is data we’re required to retain for security or legal reasons. Reach out to silasbellhaven@silasbellhaven.com for either request.

Where data is sent

Comments submitted to this site may be checked by an automated spam-filtering service as part of normal moderation. No personal data is sold or shared with advertisers.
